Do one thing, do it well! The best sliders, coneys and fries! I love greasy spoons. I love sliders. I love GOOD food. Bates simple menu is awesome. It is an insitution on 9 Mile and Middlebelt like it was in their original Livonia Location. Food: If you're expecting a greasy spoon with 40 different choices, this isn't the place. They have sliders, fries, coneys and chili, and any combination there of. They're open early and close late and you can get sliders any time. Their meat is delivered FRESH from Eastern Market in Detroit. The onions are so fresh they are as sweet as sugar. Buns as white, fluffy and all american as snow. Throw all that on a brillant flat top and slap a couple of dill pickles on it and you've got the perfect slider. The double cheeseburger is simply made with 2 portions of beef smushed together, and put on a sesame seed bun instead of a plain bun. Their coney's are all beef, skinless (unlike the traditional "snappy hot dog" coney that you're used to, and if they're not busy, they will grill your hot dog for you. Their chili sauce is just the right thing for on top of a hot dog or on some krinkle cut fries. Here's a hint. Ask for the "mixture" instead of just ketchup and mustard on your burger or coney. It's ketchup, mustard and pickle juice mixed together. It's special. They have a daily soup of they day ranging from split pea to bean with ham. All homemade and all good. Their chili (in the bowl chili) is super good. Homemade with red kidney beans and lots of chunky tomato and meat. For dessert you can get a CHOCLATE softserve milkshake (similar to a Wendy's Frosty) (no vanilla). Bates special secret: BREAKFAST. From 6am til 1045 they will serve the most simple but great CHEAP breakfast around. The Bates breakfast special: 2 eggs, choice of bacon, sausage or hamburger patty, w/ toast. hashbrowns and coffee (or choice of beverage) for $4.45Yes, $4.45!They use REAL butter on their toast, and cook their hashbrowns in the butter too. They also have sausage gravy and biscuits (although is is just ok) and pancakes on the flat top. I often order a hamburger patty, hashbrowns well done with onions and coffee. Cheaper than you can make at home with none of the dishes. Atmosphere: All swivel attached bar stools counter service. Nothing fancy. Clean stainless steel and formica. White ceramic plates and coffee mugs, plastic cups and little napkins. Lots of light and windows. ALWAYS steady. Service: Excellent! Most of the employees have made this a career, and they are happy in their job. Everyone is nice and sweet-service better than som e of the best 5 star restaurants. Many of the staff has been there since they opened in the 80's. They know your order if you're a regular, and they know you by name. Most of the people that go there are regulars and locals. Price: Super cheap! 2 double cheesburgers, fires and a drink will set you back about $6- and thats a LOT of food. Their breakfast special at $4.45 is the best deal around. If you eat in you get free refills on your beverage. What a value! Bates Hamburgers are the best sliders around. I've been going here for years and has always been consistant! Worth a trip to check them out or become a regular. Just GOOOO!

This is my happy place! I've been coming here for about 33 years and still can't get enough. Never had the breakfast items, rarely eat the fries (they're good, though, especially for crinkle cut), but I will eat my body weight in the Cheeseburgers! I know they cook the beef on top of the onions (you can watch them cook it right in front of you), but I still can't figure out how they smash such insane amounts of absolute JOY into each burger. Seriously, I smile like an idiot every time I eat here. As a little kid I would look for pop bottles to return in order to come here for a couple burgers and a chocolate shake. Oh yeah, the shake! Chocolate perfection! The perfect mate to the Cheeseburger Nirvana! Take note that the dining area is pretty small though with just two lines of seats along the South and East walls and a row along one side of the counter. Also, if you're super tall or "Husky" (I'm both), it's a snug fit. You can tell the swiveling stools were put in in an era predating super-sized everything. Doesn't matter, though... Once the burgers touch your lips, the rest of the world fades away. So, stop wasting time reading this and go get yourself a bag of 6 and a shake! Oh, BTW, it's cash only, and I've never been to the one on 5 Mile, so I'm not vouching for it. THIS is MY Bates!

Bates is only second to "G" in my opinion and that's a pretty close comparison. They have normal hours here as opposed to "G", so there's that too. Obviously get the hamburgers with onions, pickles and mustard. Cheese them if you must but I prefer them without. Order anything else here and you're doing it wrong, imho. Get 4 of them. Fries are ok but nothing special.

This was stop #1 of a 3-stop West Side slider Tour with some fellow Yelpers. Being a lover of sliders my expectations were high, especially given the fact I have heard Bates being tossed around as the "top dog" option by so many people over the years. Sadly, I was a bit underwhelmed by the food here. The sliders themselves were decent but completely unremarkable. The fries I ordered were even less remarkable. I thought perhaps I was being fussy or picky or had developed unreasonable expectations. But none of the folks I was with seemed to be jumping up and down about theirs either. Truthfully, the only thing giving much excitement (flavor-wise) to these sliders was the copious amount of mustard I squirted on after my first few kinda bland bites. Not sure I would return to Bates of Farmington Hills. Especially with so many better (to me) options around the Detroit area... with at least two of them being just a few miles away.

Shhh, don't tell anyone this...but I think I prefer this slider joint to that other "classic" well-known slider place about a mile away. I know! What a Farmington scandal! But what can I say? Taste over tradition. First of all, when I walk in here, I don't feel like I'm bothering anyone. I don't get this what-do-you-want vibe. Secondly, I think the sliders are better. Served on a fluffy white bun, alongside pickles and onions on top; they're still greasy but not gross greasy like the competitor a mile away. And thirdly, they're cool with the size of the pop they serve you. It's a pop that I will be able to sip on, not drink down in two sips size, but a normal pop-addicted American sized pop. Oh, and the crinkle-cut fries are good. So when the slider world war commences on my side of town, you know which team I'm rooting for!

He slides, he's safe! This was my first slider in Farmington when I moved here 20+ years ago. It's still pretty good. The great debate is Bates vs Greene's in Farmington. In all honesty, you can't go wrong with either. Every time I have the WC crave, I pass Bates, then I turn around and have Bates instead. Three doubles, fries, and a chocolate shake. Nothing but the best( I hear my arteries slamming shut). The breakfast here is pretty good.

Oh baby. If you love to indulge in greasy (the good kind of greasy) sliders, then Bates is your place. The menus is pretty basic, and i always go with burgers and fries...maybe a shake if I'm feeling saucy. The burgers and fries are always fresh and made to order. I've been to plenty of slider joints, and Bates is honestly the best. Fresh and greasy (but not too greasy) every time.

It's amazing how much better BATES is then greens. I went to greens first twice and both time the women that took my order made me feel like i was wasting here time and the food both time gave me major gas also the onions were burnt . The women at BATES were very friendly and they seem to enjoy what they were doing. I don't usually sit in but i felt welcome so i stayed and I could see way they had customer that have been going there for about 25 some odd years. PS The food was great!!! My choice for sliders

It doesn't get any better than Bates that goes without question. The very best sliders in Michigan or the Midwest for that matter. I grew up on this place and consider it a family legend. Bates has great coneys and chile fries also but the sliders are legendary. I love to see the same ladies running the place every time I go in there, no matter how long its been. Call in your order and its always ready on time. Don't forget to get a Chocolate shake too. Man, now I want some Bates...

Very successful little 'slider' place. The hamburgers are fresh, never frozen and the fries hand cut and fried to order. Lovely swirls of fresh cut onion are carmelized a bit and put on a small bun (kind of an eggy sweet bun) with cheese or not. Please order just like this for your first time: cheeseburgers, one order of fries and a chocolate milkshake. The 3 together are amazing. Way better than that W.C. place. You'll never go back, even though they don't have a drive through.

My dad used to bring me and my sisters here when we were little girls. It's just as good now as it was then! I had an awesome all beef Coney dog and a double cheeseburger with extra onions and pickles (only seven cents for the extras!) And a very nice staff!

First Bates Burgers I've ever been to so I can't really compare them to any other Bates establishment. But they seem fine. There are two doors so if the burger grill catches on fire there are two ways that customers can exit. It's next to a seven-eleven that you can go get some drinks from to save yourself a couple bucks. I live less than half a mile from here so I could possibly become a regular, but for now they're just ok, and I won't be visiting unless there's not much choice. CASH ONLY

Best sliders you will ever eat, hands down. Classic burger joint. Staff is friendly and food is ready quick. Just make sure you have cash as charge is not accepted.

On our tour of the burgers of Oakland County, Bates was up on the list today. Sat at the counter and ordered a double cheeseburger with onions and pickles. Both of us enjoyed them. The fluffy sesame seed buns were great and of course the meat was tasty. We also tried a chocolate shake (the small was plenty big enough) and some chili cheese fries. No gooey cheese here, just a slice of american under the chili. Liked sitting at the counter where we could watch the kitchen action. We'll definitely be back for more greasy deliciousness. CASH ONLY.

Evidently I haven't written a review for this spot before...it seems apropos after the Greene's vs. Bates UYE. I know Pauly and Jeff preferred Greene's but I'm a die hard fan of Bate's anywhere and anyway I can get them. While the Greene's sliders were a little more sloppy and messy, I liked the Bate's North burger for it's meatier taste and the pickles....the pickles were way better. It may sound silly but it's not a small thing when you're talking about sliders. Service was close to the same but Bate's only takes CASH and it was just a little friendlier, maybe. The fries were pretty much a tie though. Lastly, Bate's has Coney's, nuff said. Thanks for organizing the shindig Pauly.

I love Bates burgers! I don't come here very often but when I get a hankering for little greasy burgers I come here. The crinkle fries are a great compliment to the burgers...the only thing they don't have that I always get from other "white tile burger joints" is malts...they do have shakes but it's just not quite the same. If they had malts I'd give them 5 stars. FYI, they are cash only.

A Detroit classic that beats the pants off White Castle any day. There isn't much more I can tell you, just go in there and get yourself a few ham/cheeseburgers and you will find out what I am talking about. Onions, Pickles, ketchup, mustard, and REAL beef. Can't be beat!!!

Dirty dusty and yucky. No onion rings and bland burgers. Seriously?

Meh, this place just doesn't do it for me. I think it might be more one of those "if you grew up with it you love it" type of places. The cheese burger was really greasy and didn't seem to have much flavor beyond the condiments. The fries were meh also, some tasted "green". The staff (high school kids, or kids who should be in high school) could use some new aprons, I'm not really sure what was spattered on them but it was not appetizing. On the plus size, the onion rings were very good, not too thick and super crunchy.

Pretty much every single thing I've written about Bates of Livonia applies to Bates of Farmington Hills with a few exceptions... Bates of Farmington Hills has you walk in, past the seated area to a Take out counter. Prior to May 2010 this was torture as you had to walk through a wafting wall of disgusting and toxic cigarette smoke. Since then its actually a pleasant experience and you can actually smell the wondrous smells of french fries and greasy burgers galore. Waiting at the Counter is fun as you can peer over just enough to see what people are actually doing. Yes They really Do cook 2-3 dozen burgers at a time on top a massive heap of onions. Yes they really do have Ketchup & Mustard squirting from One Bottle onto every slider. and Yes you can watch em when someone wipes their brow and you see Sweat and Grime wiped onto their apron and they proceed to finish fixing your burgers. Doesn't it taste better knowing that they actually put their hard earned Sweat into every morsel. Don't attempt to use the bathroom there either, there's only one seat in there and Lord only knows whoever was the last one who used it. I wonder if you Flush at the right moment does it affect the Syrup to Carbonation mix of the Fountain Pop Dispenser? Sorry I've always wondered. Hey you might think I hate this place, But I don't. I come to Bates for Cheap Food - Burgers, Fries, & Pop. Just like Bates of Livonia, this Bates offers Sack Prices which is great for hungry guys like me.

I'm a fan of greasy, cheap, heart-stopping food. It's what the American dream was founded on, I'm pretty sure. My fiance was born and raised in Livonia, so he's grown up with Bates. I was first exposed to Bates a few months after we started dating, and I've been in love since (with both him and Bates, to be clear)! Bates gives you great beef on fluffy slider buns with all the fixins - everything a slider should be. I'm also a total sucker for crinkle cut fries. Yummmmm!! Their shakes are great, too. And you definitely can't beat the price! I'm never there early enough to try their breakfast though...
